Mapping equity: geographic variation in kidney care across Aotearoa New Zealand, by Johanna Birrell
In Aotearoa New Zealand, the kidney care someone receives, from the type of dialysis they are offered to how far they must travel for it, to whether they reach a transplant, can depend on where they live. Using the ASSET data platform, this project traces these patterns nationwide: who starts kidney replacement therapy and where, how dialysis modality and patient travel time vary across the country, and how residential location and ethnicity shape access to transplantation. To make this visible, the team built interactive geospatial maps of dialysis and transplant outcomes, a tool to direct resources toward the communities in greatest need.
